Featured essays or articles are about giving details and descriptions. They focus on an individual or event with a view to giving the reader an opportunity to more fully understand some interesting dimension(s) of that subject.
There is no particular formula for writing featured articles. You are free to choose a more inventive way of writing a story than the conventional “inverted pyramid” format. You may for instance use a story-within-a-story format. After deciding on the format, develop an outline.
Featured articles should be between 250 and 2,500 words. Open your story with a hook in your first paragraph as this helps draw the reader into your story. In your second paragraph, expand on your lead. Start explaining to the reader why they are reading the story.
Follow your outline in order to stay on track towards building a good feature article. Provide clear descriptions of a person or setting so that the reader can have a clear vision of it in their mind.
Choose a language that is appropriate to your readers and do not use too many quotes. Do not include your opinion in the article.
