Introduction

Coughs, yells, and uncontrolled laughter greeted me as I made my way to what would be my office for the next one and a half months. In the corridor were people who neither seemed aware of nor bothered about what was taking place around them. As I heard a nurse give a simple command to a wheel-chaired woman to “Please, pick your handkerchief,” I knew the people here needed companionship and help. This was St. Hannah Hospital’s dementia unit where I would volunteer for two hours per week. The weekly voluntary services I offered there developed me and made me a better leader.

Contrary to my expectations, the folks in the unit were more interesting, entertaining, and remarkable. Each of them was unmistakably peculiar in their own way. There was John who could think of and compose a song for anything you said in spite of not being able to remember his own identity. There was Jenifer who could recite geographical facts as if they defined her identity even though she could not remember the name of her own son. Jeremy was a staunch soccer fan and kept checking with me if his favorite team, Manchester United, had registered a win in their previous match. Each seemed to have a special feature about them that kept endearing and drawing them closer to me as one of their helpers.

Every time I touched on a good discussion point, I would know it. This is because they showed in their eyes a convincing glint that made me know I had touched their memories even if they did not realize that the stories or discussions touched on their lives. There was a vague familiarity settling beneath their doubt, confusion, and loneliness even if they could not fully recognize it. Some hope was emerging. It was like I was rekindling the memories of a long forgotten dream and breathing a fresh air of life into their lives once again. Such are the moments I will never forget about my experience serving in that facility.

My heart was both uplifted and shattered for the two hours I spent there each week. Every Wednesday, I had to prepare for my workplace where none of my clients knew my name. I would enter and reintroduce myself to the very same people I was with the previous week. I however had a purpose even though I had no identity for the two hours. The residents had found an unfamiliar significance in me. It seemed as though I got a certain breath of hope to my own life out of the two-hour friendship I provided them each Wednesday. It gave me the feeling that I was giving my best to serving humanity and making the world a better place to live in.

Conclusion

My volunteer work at this unit had a lot to do with leadership development. This is because leadership is about helping others in whatever situations they may be just like I provided the much needed company and care to the dementia patients. I can attest that one of the most important leadership skills that community service instills in volunteers is caring behavior. From the volunteer work I performed, I got the same reward as the one that is usually obtained from managerial work. This reward is the gratification one gets from helping and assisting others out of difficult situations. At the dementia unit, I felt gratified by helping the residents reduce suffering and loneliness. Similarly, a manager may help employees attend trainings or get promotions or even assist them defend themselves when summoned by senior management.
