What is Google Bard?
It is an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot tool created by Google to simulate how humans converse using machine learning and language processing. Users can integrate Bard into messaging platforms, websites, and applications to acquire natural language and realistic responses to questions. You can also use it to supplement your Google search.
Google first opened access to this chatbot on Mar 21, 2023. The company had initially announced on Feb 6. Some people believe that Google felt chatGPT’s pressure and released the chatbot before it was ready. That is because the chatbot gave a wrong answer to a question during a live demo by Sundar Pichai, Google, and Alphabet CEO.
How Does Google Bard Work?
Google Bard thrives on Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) technology. LaMDA was powered by Google’s neural network architecture known as Transformer, released in 2017. Transformer was released as open source, which is what Google has been using for other AI tools, such as GPT-3 language model. ChatGPT is a generative AI that produces almost anything, including creative writing and synopses.
The technology allows for natural language queries instead of keywords for search. Bard’s AI is focused on natural-sounding conversational responses and queries. The chatbot will not just give you answers; it will provide context that elaborates more on the responses.
How to Use Google Bard
Google Bard is quite helpful in brainstorming ideas and helping users understand any topic. However, as you use Bard, it is advisable not to rely entirely on financial, medical, or legal responses, as they may not be accurate. Below are the steps to use Google Bard;
Step 1: Navigate to bard.google.com
Step 2: If you are not signed in, you can sign in to your Google account to access the chatbot. However, there is a waitlist, and you must wait until it is your turn to access the chatbot.
Step 3: After joining, you will see a text box at the bottom of your page where you should enter your prompt or question.
Step 4: Click the submit button to send the question to the chatbot. Wait as AI technology generates a response to your query.
You can also edit the prompt on the chatbox, and Bard will regenerate the response. You will only press Edit text, found to the right of the chatbot, and then click on Update.
What Google Bard can do and What it Cannot do?
What Google Bard Can do
- Acknowledge its shortcomings
The best part about this chatbot is that it will blatantly tell you it is never 100 percent correct. However, it lets users know that their feedback will help improve the platform. Just like the Bing chatbot and ChatGPT, Bard is also a language model that learns by collecting and analyzing data from different sources on the internet.
- Annotate references
Like other technology, such as Bing chatbot, Google Bard also annotates some responses. That allows you, as the user, to review its sources. The chatbot also works with the extensive index of websites on Google, meaning its search includes the latest information on the internet. However, as mentioned earlier, it does not mean it will always be accurate.
- Designed for different casual uses
Understand that Google Bard is not meant to be a search engine. It is a platform to show people how to use such a chatbot. The chatbot can write blog posts, generate ideas and answer questions with opinions or facts.
- Does not want to give misleading information
Most chatbots will give you an answer to almost everything you ask with minimum limitations. Bard was queried to give out the websites that covered the latest cancer research, but it declined. ChatGPT will respond to such a command and even give the list of the websites. Google Bard tends to avoid giving legal, medical, or financial advice since it could not be accurate.

What Google Bard Cannot Do?
- Bard cannot give similar answers
Like similar technologies, Bard will generate a new text every time you key in a prompt. It could answer one question in different ways whenever you ask it.
- Bard has to learn
One limitation of this language model is that it has to be trained and learned on how to give the correct answers only. It has to be trained not to provide misleading information to its users. AI training is compute-intensive and endless since there will always be new information.
Is Google Bard Free?
Google has not indicated that it will charge customers for using Google Bard. Most of the Google services are free, excluding the Cloud business. Many assume that the chatbot will be incorporated into the primary search engine and will still be free to users.
Who can Use Google Bard?
The Google Bard users must be 18 years and above. They should also have a Google account. Currently, the chatbot is only available in the United Kingdom and the United States, but there are plans to expand worldwide.
Difference Between Google Bard and ChatGPT
Even though they are different, they are similar in certain aspects. Understand that both are AI chatbots. It means they are made to interact with people via machine learning and language models. These two chatbots also use a large language model (LLM). It is a machine-learning model used for creating conversational text.
One of the biggest differences is that chatGPT uses generative artificial intelligence. That means the chatbot can produce original content. It can easily write a thesis on any topic. Google Bard, on the other hand, is different. Its primary purpose is to make search more helpful to a user and feel natural.
The other difference is that the responses from chatGPT are available up to 2021. The data is not updated to the current year. Google Bard uses present and up-to-date data making it more reliable regarding current affairs.
OpenAI knows there could be plagiarism issues with their chatbot and provides users with a plagiarism detection tool. They can check for plagiarism before using the content for the intended use. Up to now, it is not clear whether Google Bard has a plagiarism detection tool.
Other search engines can acquire chatGPT and incorporate it into their system for more conversational search results. Microsoft did that with OpenAI, and the company incorporated chatGPT into the Bing search engine in January. The deal was worth around $10 billion. Google Bard is not meant for this and will only support Google.
Google Bard is still in its initial stages and is not widespread as chatGPT. It is only used in the United Kingdom and the United States. However, it shows much more reliability and potential since it is updated to the current day, unlike chatGPT.
