An abstract is a self-contained, short, and powerful statement that describes a larger work. It should not be an excerpted piece but should stand out on its own.
Before writing the abstract, you will first need to write your paper. You should write the abstract as the last section even though it will appear at the beginning of your paper. Once you are done writing the final draft of your paper, let it guide you in writing your abstract.
Write the abstract on a new page which it should not share with any other section of the essay. This page should come immediately before the introduction. The word “Abstract” should be centered at the top of the page.
Keep the abstract short, usually between 150 to 250 words. It should be a single paragraph that is not indented and does not exceed one page.
The structure of the abstract depends on the structure of your paper. Generally, you should briefly summarize the introduction, method, results, and discussion sections of your paper. Importantly, you should capture the key words of your paper in the abstract.
