Video Games Essay

Introduction

Video games have become increasingly popular among teenagers over the last few years. A significant portion of people in this age bracket use a computer, gaming console, or handheld devices like a cellphone to play video games. These games are typically among the best recreational activities for teenagers, and they are played for extended periods. The majority of youngsters today prefer playing these games over any outside games since playing video games is now easier thanks to modern joysticks and controllers. It is, however, debatable whether playing video games is beneficial or harmful to an individual. This paper examines the positive and negative effects of video games.

Positive effects of video games

Video games test and develop one’s thinking skills. It is difficult to imagine a video game that can be accomplished without requiring some sort of logical reasoning and problem-solving (Ferguson, 2018). For instance, when professional player plays Pubg, they constantly remain together with their teammates and hold off on firing until they are a set distance away from an opponent or an enemy. Upon paying great attention, one will see that the player makes an effort to position themselves perfectly behind a rock or a tree to avoid being hit. They also make decisions that pose the fewest risks possible.

Video games also speed up one’s typing speed by fastening one’s finger reflexes. The vast majority of well-known video games, including “Piano,” “Fortneight,” and “Pubg” reward quick reactions. That is, the faster one is in these games, the higher their chances of winning. People who want to register more wins and play the games for extended periods on their gaming devices have noticed a significant enhancement in their typing speed because these games depend on the coordination between the hands and eyes to determine a winner (Nakatsu et al., 2017). Not everyone can type speedily. If one wants to work as a programmer, in particular, this ability could be very helpful to them.

Video games are, additionally, beneficial for kids who struggle with socialization. Teenagers who lack social skills can boost their socialization ability by playing video games. Some teenagers are introverts and have trouble interacting with others. This group of people can, however, get over their anxiety about social connection and master the skill of warming up to people thanks to video games (Nakatsu et al., 2017). This is possible especially because these games provide a feeling of anonymity and protection.

Another benefit of video games is that they are a great distraction, in a positive sense. Everybody has issues, everywhere in the world. Many people spend a lot of time at work or in school working hard and considering solutions to their problems. On the same note, taking regular breaks from worrying about everything around one is crucial for maintaining one’s mental health. Virtually, all video games offer just that – a distraction from reality (Nakatsu et al., 2017). They thus contribute to boosting people’s mental health.

Negative effects of video games

Playing video games is highly addictive. People genuinely do not want to quit playing the games since they are so enjoyable and engrossing. Even the creators of these games invest a fortune in research and make every effort to ensure that the game is made in such a manner that players will never tire of playing it and will keep returning (Malik et al., 2021). Over time, the addictive video games one plays eventually become no more enjoyable than one’s hobbies. They become a form of prison or curse that one cannot escape from whenever one has free time, even if one wishes to (Malik et al., 2021). Gradually one begins to put off and disregard things that are much more significant to them, like their work and family.

Video games can also harm the eyesight of an individual. According to research, playing video games too much can lead to headaches, poor vision, concentration issues, and eye pain (Ferguson, 2018). Noteworthy, it is very possible to become engrossed in a video game and forget to take pauses. This is because many video games demand undivided concentration and a high level of keenness.

Additionally, video games can increase violence in a person. Many video games, such as “Get over It,” “Little Night,” and “FIFA” are purposely created such that players have a very difficult time moving forward. The players get so fixated on completing these games that, in the event of any setback, they quickly start whining and raging (Ferguson, 2018). Even individuals who do not typically get furious eventually resort to violence. This violence works to their detriment and also negatively affects those around them.

Finally, overuse injuries can result from video gaming. Repetitive strain injuries, often known as overuse injuries, happen when tendons and muscles are worked so frequently that pain and inflammation set in (Malik et al., 2021). If left to worsen, these injuries may result in permanent harm, numbness, and weakness. The specific body parts often susceptible to overuse injuries are arms and hands.

Conclusion

Video games are popular among teenagers because they are a great pastime. It requires a great deal of time, labor, and effort to create them. There is no better reliever than one’s favorite video game, especially after a long and exhausting day. In addition to the enjoyment one gets from the games, one also enhances their thinking skills, typing speed, socializing ability, and gets greatly positively distracted. However, too much video gaming can also become addictive, impair one’s vision, make a person more violent, and cause overuse injuries. Therefore, it is prudent that one plays video games responsibly and moderately.
